Japanese R&B Divas, aimi and EMI MARIA prove J-R&B is alive

In 2022, R&B is alive and thriving. Artists have been bringing soulfulness and vulnerability of 2000ʼs and 90ʼs R&B to mainstream. aimi and EMI MARIA have been listening to the same genre of music growing up, and they united together to bring R&B that’s on a par with world-renowned artists to the J-POP culture.


The duo shared their first collaborative single “Day N Night,” on October 26. “Day N Night” expresses a deep affection to the loved ones who show mental and spiritual support when one is struggling to see the light. Musically, its deep bassline works together well with the consistently rhythmic yet simple synth pad and voice samples to create that signature
classic R&B sound.

While many Japanese artists make cross-genre music in the space of J-POP, aimi has been determined to make an authentic R&B over the past 2 years. This collaboration is her finest work yet and it has a great potential to become a new chapter for J-R&B. More collaboration will be revealed next year.

aimi is a rising R&B artist born and raised in Japan, currently based in Tokyo. aimi released her first EP in the middle of a pandemic in 2020. After her latest EP “Chosen One” was released in early 2022, the number of streams has doubled and global streams increased especially in Taiwan, U.S., Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Australia. aimi recently released a collaborative single with UNI-Qreatives and a remix with grooveman Spot and Kzyboost which performed very well on many playlists.

EMI MARIA is a R&B diva, an accomplished singer and songwriter born in Papua New Guinea, raised in Kobe and now based in Tokyo. At the age of 20, she released her first indie album “Between the Music” which led her to her major debut with Victor Records in Japan. For over a decade, she continued to create new music and has released 5 studio albums. While fans have been patiently waiting for another project, in 2022 she came back with a lo-fi R&B track and a disco funk pop tune. Her listeners are mostly in Japan, U.S., Taiwan, Canada and Australia.
