在不久的將來，人類感染一種真菌病毒，失去理智，成為茹毛飲血的「餓鬼」。只有一群小孩免於變成喪屍，倖存下來。在英國郊區的一個軍事基地，科學家卡特維博士（格蓮高絲 飾）利用這群小孩進行一場又一場的殘酷的實驗作研究。實驗發現他們染上病毒後，雖然同樣嗜人肉，這些第二代「餓鬼」仍能保持個人思想情感，卡特維博士似乎在他們身上找到解救這場世紀危機的希望。這群小孩當中，美蘭妮（珊妮雅娜紐娃 飾）表現得與眾不同，她成績優異，好奇心強，想像力富豐，而且特別喜歡老師捷汀奧（珍瑪雅德頓 飾）。當基地崩塌，美蘭妮成功逃脫，但隨即肩負決定人類未來的重要任務。
The near future: humanity has been all but destroyed by a fungal disease that eradicates free will and turns its victims into flesh eating “hungries”. Only a small group of children seem immune to its effects.
At an army base in rural England, this group of unique children are being studied, subjected to cruel experiments by scientist Dr. Caldwell. Despite having been infected with the zombie pathogen and being subject to the craving for human flesh, these children retain normal thoughts and emotions, making them a vital resource in the search for a cure.
Among these children, one little girl, Melanie, stands out from the rest. She excels in the classroom, is inquisitive, imaginative and loves her favourite teacher Miss Justineau.
When the base falls, Melanie escapes along with Miss Justineau, Sergeant Parks, Dr. Caldwell and two other soldiers (Gallagher and Dillon). Against the backdrop of a blighted Britain, Melanie must discover what she is and ultimately decide both her own future and that of the human race.
